Customer Advisory Board

A standing group of customers, convened on a regular cadence, who give structured feedback on roadmap and priorities in exchange for early visibility and influence over the product.

Why does Customer Advisory Board matter?

It changes how a company gets ongoing signal once it has grown past the point where a founder can talk to every customer personally. Design partners solve this problem while a specific thing is being built; a customer advisory board solves it as an institution, meeting quarterly or twice a year to react to what is coming next. The decision it forces is deliberate curation, who sits on it determines whose priorities shape the roadmap, so an unrepresentative board quietly biases the company toward its loudest or most senior customers rather than its most typical ones.

What does Customer Advisory Board look like in practice?

Suppose a company with a few hundred paying dental practices invites eight of them (chosen to span practice size, tenure, and region rather than just the friendliest accounts) to a session each quarter where the roadmap for the next two quarters is presented and challenged before it is committed to. The board is not there to be pitched; it is there to say which of three proposed features would actually get used, and members who never say anything critical are the wrong members.

What are the common mistakes with Customer Advisory Board?

  • Filling the board with the most enthusiastic customers rather than a representative cross-section, which produces flattering but unrepresentative feedback.
  • Treating it as a one-way broadcast of the roadmap instead of a forum built to change the roadmap.
  • Convening it once and never again, which teaches members their time was wasted.
  • Confusing it with a design partner arrangement, a board advises on direction across the whole product; a design partner co-builds one thing.
